Former World No.1 Garbine Muguruza required just over an hour to breeze past Greece's Maria Sakkari and book her spot in the semifinals at the 2021 Qatar Open.
The 2018 Doha runner-up avenged her loss in Abu Dhabi earlier this season, where Sakkari prevailed in straight sets. However, it was all Muguruza on Thursday night in Doha, as the Spaniard trounced Sakkari in a 6-3 6-1 victory.
"Probably when I had the opportunity, I took it," Muguruza said after her match. "I just went for the point and converted those break points and could close the match when I had the moment for it."
The two-time Grand Slam champion put on a spectacular performance, hitting 14 winners to only seven unforced errors. Furthermore, she won 80% of her first serves, breaking her Greek opponent five times in the process.
"I think that's being efficient," reflected Muguruza. "Sometimes you try your best and it doesn't go your way. But today I felt like everything was going well."
The Spaniard next faces two-time Doha champion Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals, with both ladies tied at 2-2 in their head-to-head meetings.
