Two-time Grand Slam titlist Garbine Muguruza displayed her championship pedigree on Wednesday at the National Bank Open (Rogers Cup), as she fought past Kaia Kanepi to reach the round of 16.
The Spaniard recorded a 6-4 6-4 victory over her veteran opponent, relying on her powerful groundstrokes to keep the Estonian at bay.
Although Kanepi did create 9 break point opportunities in the first set, she was only able to capitalize on one of them. Conversely, Muguruza took advantage of both her break point opportunities, which was enough to win the first set.
Both ladies exchanged breaks in the second set, but it was Muguruza's exceptional serving that saw her through. The eighth seed won 14 of 16 points behind her big first serve, and finished proceedings with a second break that saw her advance after an hour and 33 minutes.
The former World No.1 will face Belinda Bencic, as the Swiss star ended the dream run of Serena Williams to set up their round of 16 encounter.
