Garbine Muguruza barely advanced to the WTA Finals semifinals but today against her compatriot Badosa she put forward a strong performance. The younger and less experienced Badosa struggled with her level all day long and she was all over the place. She did not serve well, she did not play well and generally very rarely had moments resembling her form from the start of the event.
Muguruza had a very good game plan which consisted of defending well and sending as many balls back. Badosa did not really know what to do with them and her play was filled with errors. Muguruza was also quite effective on her own serve winning many free points. Badosa was unable to return a lot of serves which was unusual as Muguruza does not possess a devastating serve.
The first set started off with both players winning their service games but Muguruza was a lot more convincing. Eventually, Badosa ran into trouble and she did not wiggle out of it. Muguruza took the break and the lead before adding another one to close out the set with 6-3. The 2nd set opened with an early break for Muguruza and Badosa never quite recovered.
She had a pretty good chance at 0-2 with several break points but never produced what she needed to and Muguruza was able to hold on. From thereMuguruza cruised to a 6-3 2nd set finish.
