Garbiñe Muguruza has booked her spot in the semi-finals of the
WTA Finals in Guadalajara after ending the run of Anett Kontaveit 6-4, 6-4.
Kontaveit who is already through to the latter stages was on a 12 match winning streak looking unbeatable at times but fell to the former World No.1 who will advance as the second qualifier out of the group.
This also has historic repercussions as she will next face her compatriot, Paula Badosa on Tuesday. The victor will become the first women to advance to the final from Spain since 1993.
Coming into the match, the Estonian had faced a total of three break points overall in her two matches but was under the cosh early against Muguruza facing four in her opening two service games.
After consolidating the opening break, the Spaniard eased through her service games and survived break points to serve out the set 6-4.
It was a similar story in the second as Muguruza broke to begin the set and she didn't face a break till the end serving out the match with an ace.
