Muguruza had a 1st round BYE as a seed and faced American Ann Li in the 2nd round. It was an interesting matchup between two players who enjoy playing aggressively with Li being especially dangerous on her own day. While solid overall, Li still lacks the consistency to beat top players and today was that case. Muguruza landed the first punch in the match taking a 2-0 lead with an early break.
She nearly extended it a to 3-0 lead after having several break points as well. That proved like a costly mistake for Muguruza was Li battled back to make it 2-2 but determined not to completely lose momentum Muguruza was able to take another break 4-2. That was enough to win the opening set with 6-4.
It was a good effort from Muguruza against Li who had moments where she shined in the match. Li started off the 2nd set well hitting some great shots but once again Muguruza landed the first blow taking a 2-1 lead. After saving break points in her service game, Mugurza extended the lead to 3-1. Li fought back to take a 4-3 lead.
Eventually, Muguruza once again asserted herself taking a 5-4 lead before closing out the match with 6-4. A hard-fought win for Muguruza but that will suit her well going forward. She might face Azarenka in R3 and the added reps should do her well.
