The match that everyone was waiting for ended in favor of Osaka 6-3 and 6-0, but it was not so important what happened during the match but what happened after it.
Naomi Osaka dominated in the match with
Coco Gauff, allowing her to win only 3 games. In the first set, Coco still had a chance to get into the match when she took the opponent's serve and the score was 4-3 for Osaka, but since then Gauff has not won a game and lost the match.
After the match, Naomi walked over to Coco's bench and asked if she wanted to do an interview with her after the match. Coco refused at first because she thought she would cry all the time, but Osaka convinced her.
“I said no, because I knew I was going to cry the whole time, but she encouraged me to do it,” Gauff told Mary Joe Fernandez on the court. “She was amazing, I’m going to learn a lot from this match.
“She’s been so sweet to me, so thank you for this,”
she said, addressing Osaka. “I don’t want people to think that I’m trying to take this moment away from her, because she really deserves it. So thank you,” she added.
Osaka spoke about her opponent and her team and was excited to be able to play against her at such an event. It was one of the most beautiful acts throughout the
US Open.
“I just want to say, if you’re still here, you guys raised an amazing player,” she said, fighting back tears.
“I remember I used to see you guys training in the same place as us, and for me, the fact that both of us made it and we’re both still still working as hard as we can, is incredible.
“I think you guys are amazing. Coco, I think you’re amazing.”
