Anastasia Potapova arrived in Madrid after winning her maiden trophy in Istanbul but she got rocked by
Naomi Osaka in straight sets 6-3 6-1.
The American admitted leading up to this event that she is very keen on proving herself on clay believing herself capable of playing well on the surface. In Osaka's mind, it's all about getting used to the surface and she practice at the Nadal Academy in Manacor where she observed Nadal preparing on the surface. She would not say whether he told her some tips but she looked super solid against Potapova.
The Russian was spectacular last week in Istanbul and followed it up with a round 1 smashing of Mladenovic. Today she was the one who got thrashed by Osaka who took some time to get things going but once she did, it was game over. Potapova actually took the first break after some great hitting but Osaka pulled it back not long after that.
She then added another break to finish off the set with 6-3. Osaka did not serve ver well but when she hit it, she only dropped two points on it. She did not serve much better in the 2nd set at all but she was simply dominating from the baseline. Potapoa tried attacking but she committed too many errors and she did not know hot counter Osaka from the line.
The American finished it off with 6-1 and it was a superb start for Osaka who looked quite impressive. Other players should watch on, she is playing with a purpose.
