Naomi Osaka announced in a statement posted on her official Twitter page that she is withdrawing from the
Roland Garros.
Osaka created a lot of controversy after announcing she would be skipping press conferences at this event. The storm that ensued was a mess for the event, for Osaka and for other players. Current players and former players offered their opinion with Osaka's sister also weighing in.
After winning her first-round match Osaka declined the press conferences which resulted in a fine and a warning from Roland Garros to not do it again. The event released a statement in which they explained their position and reasoning even mentioning defaulting as a possible punishment.
Well, a day after that she is officially out of the event after deciding to withdraw. Osaka explained in a Twitter statement:
"The best thing for the tournament, other players and my well being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on tennis going in Paris. I never wanted distractions and I accept that my timing was not ideal."
Osaka further explained she never wanted to trivialize mental health or use the term lightly. She revealed she suffered from depression ever since the US Open 2018. She also explained her social anxiety which she has had for a long time.
Her statement further revealed she was feeling anxious and vulnerable prior to the event and it only got worse once she got here. Skipping press conferences was a way for Osaka to exercise self-care. She also said she will take some time off the court and she will actively pursue to work with the tour on issues like hers. Read the full statement below:
