Former world number one Martina Navratilova believes that legendary tennis star Chris Evert deserves a statue at the French Open just like Spain’s Rafael Nadal. The second Grand Slam of the year is set to begin on Sunday in Paris where players from all over the world will battle to secure the ultimate prize.
This year’s mega-event will be even more special considering that it will feature Nadal for the last time. The Spaniard, back in 2023, announced that the 2024 season would be his last at the highest level as he has struggled with consistent injury struggles. The 37-year-old remains the most successful player in the history of the competition, having won it 14 times. It is because of this reason there has been calls for his statue at the mega-event.
Navratilova, who is regarded as one of the greatest women’s players in the history of tennis, having won as many as 18 Grand Slam titles, was recently quoted in a report where she expressed her opinion that if there will be a statue of Nadal’s for his achievement at the Roland Garros, there should be a statue for Evert too who has won the most titles (7) in the women’s singles category. “If Rafa has a statue there, then Chris should have a statue, also,” she said. “They can make room on the grounds, she’s the OG queen of clay.”
