Martina Navratilova is unsure why the WTA removed the 5-set match format from the
WTA Finals event saying that she doesn't know why it stopped.
For a four-year period, the WTA Finals championship match was played in a best-of-5 format with Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova playing in the first match like that. It happened in 1984 and lasted until 1988 after which it was abandoned and Navratilova is unsure why it happened.
They spoke about the decision in a 2019 BT Sport interview where Navratilova expressed her displeasure about the decision:
"I don't know why they took it away because it was a big controversy when they started to receive us like let's give it a go. Of course we wanted to play when you get equal prize money and the majors and the beef against that was well we only play two out of three."
She added:
"We had maybe 10 years of that and then they stopped it. Again I don't know why they stopped it."
