Dominic Thiem books Gijon semi-final over Francisco Cerundolo

Dominic Thiem played another solid match to take down Francisco Cerundolo 6-4 6-3 and book a semi-final spot in Gijon.

The Austrian took a bit over 90 minutes to win this match and it was a fairly competitive one where he demonstrated a very solid level overall to take down a tricky player in Cerundolo. It was one of his better matches recently and it is the first semi-final he secured on hard courts since the 2020 ATP finals.

Thiem played a rather solid opening set not serving brilliantly but being quite dominant behind his first serve. He was only 3/8 behind his first serve but he did not need to be as good because Cerundolo was struggling to keep the level as high as he needed to. Thiem broke him twice in the first set which was enough to take it 6-4.

The second set was quite similar as Thiem took an early break as well with Cerundolo breaking back quickly right away. The Austrian kept applying pressure and ultimately secured another break which was enough this time to win it 6-3. Overall a very solid performance and much more consistent than Cerundolo who has oscillated too much.
