Tennis journalist Mario Boccardi has criticised a headline
that attacked America’s
Jessica Pegula.
The 29-year-old suffered a defeat in the quarterfinal of
Wimbledon 2023 against Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova with a score of
6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
After the result, Pegula was criticised heavily in a
headline posted by The Times which stated: “Six quarter-finals, six defeats: “Jessica
Pegula needs dynamic that family billions can’t buy.”
The headline was criticised heavily by Boccardi who, in a
post on Twitter, shared admiration for the Buffalo-born by stating: “Like, she
is Jessica Pegula. She's a girl who wasn't satisfied with that and who worked
extremely hard to pursue her dream of becoming a strong tennis player. I have
nothing but respect for her.”
The result against Vondrousova will be a
heartbreaking one for Pegula as it was indeed the sixth time when she faltered
at the last-eight stage.
She has now been defeated three consecutive times at
Australian Open in the quarterfinals in 2021, 2022 and 2023 editions. Pegula
was also defeated in the quarterfinals of the French Open and the US Open in 2022.
On the positive side, the current world number four has just
registered her best-ever outing at Wimbledon.
While doing so, she registered three straight-set victories —
against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa, Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Ukraine’s Lesia
Tsurenko.
Before losing the last-eight encounter, Pegula lost just one
set in the competition which was against fellow American Lauren Davis in the
first round.
