Lelylah Fernandez pulled off another upset by taking down Aryna Sabalenka in an epic 3-set match at the US Open.
The Canadian player enjoyed massive support from the Ashe crowd all night and that helped her propel past Aryna Sabalenka who was the clear favourite in this match. It was a level headed performance by Fernandez who remained calm in the biggest moments of the biggest match of her career. It is something that has followed her all throughout this event as she took down great players like Kerber, Svitolina, Sabalenka and Osaka en route to the final.
Asked after the match how she won she said:
“I have no idea. I would say it’s thanks to the New York crowd. They never gave up, they fought for me. I just wanted to be in the finals. I fought for every point, Aryna just fought for the same thing.”
Indeed, it was a fight in which both gave it their all but ultimately Fernandez proved better. In the final game of the match where Sabalenka served to remain in the match, she did not hit the court one single time completely succumbing to nerves and the pressure of the moment. Sadly, it's not the first time for Sabalenka to do so.
