As expected, there was to be no wildcards for Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki and Emma Raducanu ahead of the French Open as Roland Garros wildcards are now set ahead of the May 27 start date.
Raducanu perhaps knew the writing was on the wall but stands a better chance of making it to the next Grand Slam. She is four alternates out from the main draw and with a lot of WTA players out injured can likely count on a late spot. She also withdrew earlier today from Strasbourg seemingly with qualifying her likely route now if she cannot make up those spots over the next week.
Halep was less clear cut with the former World No.1 seemingly gearing up for a crack at the clay court season. After injuries took her out of Oeiras and Madrid, she is playing the Tropheé Clarins this week and has also accepted an invite to play Rabat next week in a potential sure fire sign that she would try to play Roland Garros. But aside from any late call up to play qualifying by the FFT her route has gone.
As has Caroline Wozniacki who last played in Madrid in a dismal showing against Sara Errani. The former World No.1 has enough ranking points to play qualifying but has snubbed that route relying solely on wildcards. The Dane previously cut her 2023 return short perhaps too early with one or two tournament runs likely being enough to prevent issues like this occurring. But despite some murmurings that she would get one of a few unresolved spots, she has not. Like Halep, the grass will likely be the next stop.
Who has got wildcards though? Alizé Cornet, Fiona Ferro, Elsa Jacquemot, Kristina Mladenovic, Chloé Paquet, Jessika Ponchet take wildcards direct from the FFT. As well as Ajla Tomljanovic and Sachia Vickery both due to reciprocal agreements with Tennis Australia and USTA. So as expected, it was never hugely a route for the well known names. Lois Boisson is perhaps the big casualty.
A player on a serious hot streak, she was 23-1 this season and looked a lock for a wildcard. Albeit she got injured against Ferro in Paris and was seen on crutches this week. After such a great stint, it ends in disaster.
