Jessica Pegula is into the semi-finals of the 2025
Charleston Open after taking down
Danielle Collins in a comeback clinic from the top seed as she is into the latter stages.
Pegula who reached the final of Miami has wasted little time in starting off her clay court campaign. The American who also won in Austin prior to the Sunshine Double is making up for lost time and won 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.
One of the most topsy turvy matches all year on the WTA Tour, Pegula was roundly trounced in the opening set by Collins who was defending champion but came back to barely lose a game from there on out as she turned on the afterburners and ascended to victory.
She is likely on a collision course based off ranking with Zheng Qinwen and could face an all American final if she gets through. Emma Navarro v Amanda Anisimova headlines the bottom section.
But also it could see Sofia Kenin figure who faces Anna Kalinskaya. The Russian would likely be a welcome foe but also not as she was pushed to the limit in Miami by Kalinskaya who is on a resurgent run. But those other ties happen this evening so she will soon know who she is facing.
Pegula in the tie against Collins has won all six of her career meetings with her compatriot, a perfect record that has been maintained for 13 years. They first played each other back in 2012 when they were both teenagers and now as they are in their 30's, they are still taking each other on.
Pegula advanced to her fourth semi-final of 2025 and her third in a row in Charleston having previously lost to Belinda Bencic and Daria Kasatkina the last two years. So she will look to break her hoodoo and she has also defended her points.
With little to come off in the next few months, this also gives her the leg up on the other members of the top five with nothing really to lose.
