ARYNA SABALENKA REIGNS SUPREME IN NEW YORK!
Rejoicing in her victory over Jessica Pegula at the 2024 US Open, Aryna Sabalenka a year on from true heartbreak in the form of her defeat to Coco Gauff has completed the feat at Flushing Meadows.
But as ever, it was a post match speech that was full of the usual Sabalenka swagger as well as being humble in victory. She lauded her opponent who said: "I wish she would’ve let me get one set." This was a quote that Sabalenka then referenced.
She said that she believes that Pegula who got past her Quarter-Final duck in the process but lost out in the final will win at least more than one Grand Slam in the future. But Sabalenka started the tournament as a favourite and delivered on that.
"Oh my god. I’m speechless right now. So many times, I thought I was so close to winning this. It was a dream of mine. Finally I got this beautiful trophy.. it means a lot. It was a difficult couple of weeks. I know how tough it is to lose in the final Jessica. You’re showing amazing tennis. I’m more than sure you’re gonna get one. Not one maybe more but let’s start with one. In the 2nd set I was just praying there. And you’re talking about me giving you one set," said Sabalenka.
She also shared pride of her team after all that she has been through from the the US Open loss also to the passing of her ex boyfriend Konstantin Koltsov, it has been a roller coaster but one that has handed Sabalenka success and a mindset to not give up.
“I remember all those tough losses in the past year.. it’s gonna sound easy but never give up on your dream. Keep dreaming and keep working hard. If you’re really working hard and you sacrifice everything for your dream, you’re gonna get it one day. I’m super proud of myself. I never say that. But really guys I’m super proud.
"I’m proud of my team that no matter what, no matter what situation we’re facing this season and in the past, we were able to go through it and get all those beautiful trophies. Their support is everything. You’re my family. I couldn’t imagine my tennis life or personal life without you. I really love you. I don’t say it often, but I say it sometimes. I love you so much. Thank you for being you.”
