Andre Agassi shares his thoughts on the US Open semifinals between Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe. The qualification of Fritz marks the first time a local male player has reached the final at Flushing Meadows since Andy Roddick fell to Roger Federer in the 2006 final.
It was already known that an American would be in the final after Tiafoe defeated Grigor Dimitrov and Fritz beat Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. However, it was yet to be determined which of them would reach their first Grand Slam final. Despite Big-Foe being up two sets to one, Fritz kept his composure to make a comeback at Arthur Ashe Stadium, securing a 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.
The match was a celebration for the local crowd who unexpectedly had two of their representatives facing off in the semifinal. Fritz will have a tough challenge in the final against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who is seeking his second Grand Slam title.
Following the world No. 12's victory, Andre Agassi commented on an Instagram post by Tennis TV, giving his verdict on the thrilling duel that took place Friday night: “They battled” - Andre Agassi commented on a collage of Fritz and Tiafoe.
Agassi won the US Open title in 1994 and 1999, and was also a runner-up in 1990, 1995, 2002, and 2005. The former world No. 1 secured 8 Grand Slam titles in his career, tied with Jimmy Connors for the second most major titles for the United States, behind Pete Sampras' 14.
Fritz achieved one of the most significant victories of his career by overcoming an inspired Tiafoe. After the duel, the American No. 1 spoke of his emotion through tears in the on-court interview: “It’s the reason I do what I do, the reason why I work so hard. I’m in the finals of the US Open, It’s a dream come true and I’m going to give it everything I possibly have. I know that for a fact.”
