Ons Jabeur had a tremendous 2021 season which saw her enter the top 10 as well only just missing a post at the WTA Finals.
The Tunisian player did just enough to play at the WTA Finals but a historic run by Anett Kontaveit that included two back-to-back title runs in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca knocked her out. It's Kontaveit who will play as the 8th player in Guadalajara but Jabeur was still set to travel to the event as the first alternate.
However, that won't be happening as the Tunisian player still hasn't recovered from an elbow injury she sustained in Moscow. Jabeur retired in Moscow due to an elbow injury which forced her to miss a tennis event in Italy next week. That ultimately resulted in her dropping out of the WTA Finals becoming an alternate instead.
However, she announced that the injury has not yet passed and she won't be able to travel to the event because of it. She wrote on Twitter:
"I am sorry to announce that I won't be able to go to Guadalajara as an alternate. I need more time to recover and prepare for next season. I am super proud of achieving my goal and my best ranking in the world: 7! Thank you for your support and see you next year!"
It's an unfortunate end to the Tunisians season but taking time away to properly heal her injury is probably a good thing in the long run. She will be ready for the 2022 season and seeing how much improvement she showed over the course of 2021, she will be a dangerous opponent.
