Naomi Osaka faced Marta Kostyuk in a bid to reach the 4th round of the US Open and she started off better but Kostyuk defended well. Midway through the 1st set Osaka broke down the defence of Kostyuk to take the lead. She would add another break late in the set winning it with 6-3. The 2nd set wasn't as easy for her as the 1st set. She was the first one to surrender her serve allowing Kostyuk to take the lead.

She would build upon that lead almost winning the set but the sole set point she had was saved by Osaka. Ultimately we ended up in the tiebreak where it was Kostyuk who player better. She stunned Osaka especially because things looked grim after the 1st set when Kostyuk took a medical timeout. Despite that, she managed to string together several good rallies to win the 2nd set 7-6(4). Early in the 3rd set Kostyuk took another medical timeout but continued to play.

In the 1st game after the medical Kostyuk had two break points but failed to convey either of them. Visibly disappointed by it she played a very bad next game giving Osaka the big break she needed. She would go on to win the next game as well, taking a 4-2 lead which became a 6-2 victory.

One of the matches that were cut short by the rain yesterday was a match between Mertens and Sorribes Tormo. At the time of suspension, Mertens was up one set and one game. When play resumed today it was the Spaniard who played better initially and took a lead. The only problem for her was that she wasn't able to build upon that lead. Mertens remained patient awaiting her chance which she ultimately got and she took it to equalise and subsequently win the match. The end result was 6-3 7-5 but it was a hard-fought victory for Mertens who deserved it.
