First quarterfinal in Miami ✨ @naomiosaka extends her match winning streak to 23 with a straight-sets win over Mertens, 6-3, 6-3. #MiamiOpen
It was not an easy match for Naomi Osaka but she did well to defeat Elise Mertens at the Miami Open. She came out furious breaking Mertens early in the match taking a 3-0 lead in the process. She would add one more to make it 5-1 before Mertens pulled it back.
In the end, Osaka won the set with 6-3 after a lengthy service game where she saved a break point. She was playing well hitting balls hard from the baseline which continued in the 2nd set. Mertens did much better holding on until 3-2 when she called for a medical timeout.
The medical did not have the desired effect and Osaka proceeded to break Mertens twice en route to the 6-3 2nd set victory. The Japanese player was sensational despite some moments of lapsed focus and she moves on in Miami eyeing that trophy.
She will either play Sakkari or Pegula in the quarterfinal with either pairing a fascinating matchup to be excited about.

The whole idea of giving out wildcards is to give new & up-coming players a chance at getting as much circuit match-practice under their belts as possible. And this is a HUGE must and opportunity for these new kids on the block. Why curtail opportunities for these newbies in favour of stalwart monopoly?? That just isn't fair. At least give these lesser known players a chance to become more familiar at playing in bigger tournaments & give them also a chance of getting the crowds behind these underdogs.
