Former World No.1
Naomi Osaka made her long-anticipated return to the WTA on Tuesday at the
Melbourne Summer Set I, battling past veteran
Alize Cornet in a close opening-round encounter.
The Japanese superstar prevailed 6-4 3-6 6-3 in a little over two hours, looking nothing like the dominant champion as she struggled to defeat the crafty Frenchwoman. Osaka appeared inconsistent on serve, connecting on less than 40% of her first serves. The four-time Grand Slam champion also committed an astounding eight double faults, which led to her losing the second set.
After a close first set that saw Osaka's superior play prevail, the defending Australian Open champion obtained an early break in the second to lead 3-2. However, erratic play saw her lose her serve, as Cornet amped up her intensity. The Frenchwoman would go on to win the next four games, forcing a decider.
The final set saw Osaka's brilliance emerge, as she raced to a 4-1 lead. Despite being broken one more time, the Japanese star was able to hold on to victory, ensuring her return match did not end in defeat.
