French Tennis Federation president Gilles Moretton gave his opinion on
Naomi Osaka refusing to attend press conferences at the
Roland Garros this year.
Naomi Osaka released a statement a few days ago explaining that she would not take part in post-match press conferences at the Roland Garros this year. Osaka explained her reason for doing so as 'protecting her mental health' which is something a lot of people can relate to. Even so, she will be fined up to £14,000 for every press conference she misses.
French Tennis Federation president Giles Moretton shared his own thoughts on the matter. He said:
“It is a phenomenal error and it shows to what extent it is necessary to have strong governance. What is happening is not, in my opinion, acceptable. It is tennis we want to promote.”
One player who also voiced his opinion on the matter was Novak Djokovic. The Serbian was asked about it at the Belgrade Open and he was understanding of the issues Osaka has. He said:
"It can be very unpleasant, but it is part of the sport and part of your life on the tour. This is something we have to do otherwise we will get fined.”
For now, Osaka is standing by her decision to do so which is respectable but depending on the extent of her stay in Paris the overall fine bill might become quite large. You can read her full statement on the matter below.
