The
Indian Wells tournament is still going on, but the number of players still left is dwindling at a rapid rate, with the quarterfinal lineups already half complete. With the Miami Open fastly approaching, many players want to remain on the court playing to keep their match fitness and sharpness up.
Paula Badosa and
Emma Navarro are two players doing this, with mixed results.
The
WTA 125 event in Austin, Texas, is currently ongoing with the last-16 stage set to be played out. A number of talented players have made the trip, with some familiar names from the WTA Tour in action. This includes Badosa, Navarro, McCartney Kessler, Donna Vekic, Lulu Sun, Kimberly Birrell, Catherine McNally and Bianca Andreescu.
Badosa back in the winning enclosure
Injury trouble has cost Badosa dearly in recent times. A sharp decline in the rankings saw her drop outside of the top 100 in the world, with the points coming off from the 2025 Australian Open run along with several other events in a positive start to last year. Entered as a wildcard in Austin, she is back in the winning enclosure with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Elena-Gabriela Ruse.
A straight set defeat to Yulia Putintseva quickly halted her progress and ambitions in California. The Spaniard wanted to respond quickly to this huge disappointment, and she did so in a hard-fought win over a player ranked 30 places above her, showing the seismic downfall she experienced.
The first two sets saw rampant endings by both players, respectively winning five and four games in a row to get on the board. The all-important third set saw the momentum swing constantly. Ruse eventually put herself in a position to win the match, but could not see it out on serve. This break by Badosa was in the midst of a four-game run where she wrapped up proceedings to book her spot in the last-16. Former Wimbledon quarterfinalist Sun is her next challenge.

Navarro continues woeful form
The number one seed going into this event, Navarro will be bitterly disappointed with a fourth consecutive defeat. She could have set up a clash against Badosa with a win, but instead was taken down 6-4, 6-4 by the New Zealander Sun.
Aside from the Adelaide International, Navarro has failed to win two or more matches in the nine tournaments competed in this year. The world number 25 is falling away fast and is in dire need to pick up any sort of form or momentum. She will not be getting any in this WTA 125 event, with the daunting prospect of now competing in the Miami Open next up.
Sun did not even qualify for Indian Wells and was raring to go for this one. Navarro had been a seed in California but was unable to see off Sonay Kartal, wasting a match point in the process. There were no match points being created by the American in this tussle. She did get the first break of the match on the way to a 4-1 lead in the first set. However, in the blink of an eye, Sun won 10 points in a row amid a five-game winning run which saw her take the first set. The world number 100 broke the Navarro serve again before she responded by breaking instantly back. This was met by a ruthless Sun taking a 5-3 lead before eventually seeing the contest out with her fourth match point.
Concerning times for the former top 10 player who, if not careful, could swiftly drop out of the world's top 32.
