The draw
for the 2023
Madrid Open has been confirmed and the tournament will take place
from April 24th to May 7th.
Defending champion
Ons Jabeur and world No. 1
Iga Swiatek are the top favorites to compete for
this year's title.
With the brackets defined, the players already know who
their potential opponents could be throughout the tournament.
The first
bracket is led by the Polish player Swiatek, who could face
Elena Rybakina in
the quarterfinals if both players fulfill their favoritism. Nevertheless,
players such as Qinwen Zheng, Barbora Krejcikova, and Bianca Andreescu will be
tough opponents along the way.
In the
second bracket, the top seeds are
Jessica Pegula and
Daria Kasatkina.
The
American player will try to defend the points earned after reaching last year's
final, while the Russian player will attempt to show that she can also achieve
good results on clay, despite having been out of form in recent months.
On
Pegula's way, Marie Bouzkova and Victoria Azarenka appear as strong rivals,
while Kasatkina could cross paths with Sloane Stephens or her compatriot
Veronika Kudermetova.
A third potential
quarterfinal match could be between two skilled clay players,
Coco Gauff and
Ons Jabeur. In 2022, they were among the most outstanding players on clay, with
Gauff reaching the French Open final and Jabeur already winning the Madrid Open
title. Badosa, Sakkari, and Ostapenko are some of the players who will try to
progress further in the tournament.
In the last
quarterfinals,
Caroline Garcia and
Aryna Sabalenka could face each other. The
Belarusian player is in great form and is the defending Grand Slam champion, as
well as the 2021 Madrid Open champion.
Both players feel more comfortable on
hard courts and will face opponents who will try to take advantage of this on
their way to the top 8, such as Petra Kvitova, Beatriz Haddad Maia, or Leylah Fernandez.
