In our
Preview of the second day of action at the WTA 500
San Diego Open, also known as Cymbiotika San Diego Open, the action will get underway on Tuesday, September 12, with the likes of Jelena Ostapenko, Leylah Fernandez and Danielle Collins set to take to the courts.
First up on the court in Barnes Stadium will be the all-American Round of 32 match between qualifier Louisa Chirico and Collins. The latter will be looking to repeat the deep run that she experienced at the Canadian Open last month, where she reached the quarter-finals.
Up next will be Sofia Kenin against the sixth seed Veronika Kudermetova. Their current head-to-head is 1-1 and both were eliminated in the first round of the US Open, meaning this match could favor whoever is more consistent throughout.
Stephens-Mertens and Haddad Maia-Fernandez
After 5:30 p.m., 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens will take on Elise Mertens. They have faced each other twice before, with their head-to-head leveling out at 1-1. However, both of these matches were five years ago, with the Belgian ousting the American at the 2018 Cincinnati Open before she returned the favor at that year's New York major.
Last up in Barnes Stadium will be seventh seed Beatriz Haddad Maia against Leylah Fernandez. The latter will be hoping for a good run here after disappointment at the US Open. The Canadian, who finished as runner-up at the Slam in 2021, was defeated in the first round this year.
Fernandez leads the head-to-head with Haddad Maia 2-1, including a win against her at this year's Canadian Open. However, the Brazilian player has had a more successful season overall, reaching the semi-finals of the French Open and rising to as high as No. 10 in the WTA Ranking at one point.
Ostapenko and Kostyuk also make an appearance
Over on Court 2, Ostapenko will face eighth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. The former saw a lot of success at the US Open, defeating top seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek in the fourth round before being defeated by eventual champion Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Alexandrova made the third round, ousting Fernandez and Lesia Tsurenko before losing to Marketa Vondrousova. It could be difficult for Ostapenko to win this match, as Alexandrova currently leads their head-to-head 4-1, but the Latvian can take a lot of confidence from the knowledge that she can defeat the best in the world.
Before this match, Marta Kostyuk will play against Magda Linette. This will be the first time that the two players have faced each other.
