Emma Raducanu was praised for her superb response to questioning surrounding Judy Murray and her response to the mixed doubles withdrawal following her defeat against Lulu Sun at Wimbledon.
Raducanu as expected saw most of the press conference deviated to questioning surrounding Murray calling her withdrawal 'astonishing' which she later said was 'sarcasm' as the Brit cited stiffness in her wrist as the reasoning behind it.
But those looking for a scoop were left empty handed as Raducanu said she hadn't seen it and was seemingly prepared for it. A reporter asked: “Were you surprised by Judy Murray’s reaction on Twitter? Would you look to speak to her behind closed doors?”
“I haven’t seen her reaction, so I don’t know," responded Raducanu seemingly awaiting the questioning. When the reporter later clarified what Murray had said and hinted that she also called it sarcastic, it got a simple response. “I’m sure she didn’t mean it.”
Those on social media said that she handled it well and that she was an icon for responding in the way she did and not biting to the reporters' questioning.
She also explained during the press conference why she withdrew from the mixed doubles. “I don’t think it was a mistake because I was feeling fine, then yesterday morning just woke up with stiffness. I have to prioritize myself, my singles and my body," said Raducanu.
"I think it was the right decision. I stand by the decision. It was a tough decision because it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. Of course, I didn’t want to take his (Murray’s) last match away from him. But at the end of the day, I think a lot of the players in a similar situation would have done the same thing, prioritizing their body."
During the same press conference, she did also respond to the backlash surrounding it. “I think with every decision, people are entitled to their opinions. Of course, there was a bit of a cloud around the decision.” Raducanu admits. “I don’t think I would have done it any other way. I think in this sport especially, as an individual, you have to make your own calls and prioritize yourself. Especially with my (injury) history, I just had to put myself first.”
