Elena Rybakina is through to the Quarter-Finals of the 2024
French Open at
Roland Garros after taking down
Elina Svitolina in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to begin Monday and the second week in Paris.
Svitolina priorly led their Head to Head. But in reality, it was partially an anomaly with the duo not playing since 2021. Since then Rybakina has emerged to being a huge name in the sport and Svitolina has returned towards her former glories but they are less evenly matched now. As a result, it was a pretty simple win in just over an hour for the Kazakh.
She will now face Elina Avanesyan or Jasmine Paolini. Currently the Russian leads but is down heavily the second set so it will likely head towards a decider. But her route will be promptly set shortly. Rybakina who reached the first Grand Slam Quarter-Final of her career at the 2021 edition of Roland Garros has advanced for the fifth time overall and the first since Wimbledon last year.
She has not dropped a set all tournament and she has not shown any sign of any health issues despite barely playing before the tournament due to ongoing problems. She won Stuttgart earlier in the season and played Madrid. But she then had to withdraw from Rome which in itself meant she lost a huge chunk of points. The silver lining though is that she didn't play Roland Garros last year so in reality she doesn't have to defend any points so she can make up any deficit this next week in Paris.
In the semi-finals, she could yet be on a collision course with Aryna Sabalenka. She is up next facing off against Emma Navarro. A Quarter-Final for the winner against Mirra Andreeva could await with the Russian facing Varvara Gracheva later this afternoon. So the bottom half of the draw will be plotted by the end of the day with Rybakina the first through.
