Could Serena Williams get her revenge? The Williams sisters have learned their opening-round opponents in the US Open women’s doubles draw, with Serena set to face Maya Joint, the 20-year-old Australian who defeated her at Wimbledon earlier this summer.

Serena and Venus Williams will take on the No. 14-seeded team of Hao-Ching Chan and Joint when the first round begins Thursday. The matchup gives Serena an immediate rematch against Joint, who ended her singles campaign at the All England Club in three sets.

Joint defeated Serena 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 in their Wimbledon clash, a match that also ended with Serena suffering a knee injury. The 44-year-old subsequently withdrew from the doubles tournament, where she had been scheduled to partner Venus, meaning the sisters never got the chance to compete together at the All England Club.

Their return to New York therefore carries plenty of significance. Serena is back at the US Open after four years away from competitive tennis, while Venus is also continuing her own comeback. The sisters last played together at Flushing Meadows in 2022, when they lost in the first round in what was expected to be Serena’s final appearance at the tournament.

Williams sisters reunite for another US Open run

Serena and Venus have a long history at their home Grand Slam. They won the women’s doubles title in New York in 1999 and 2009 and have combined for a 27-7 record across nine US Open appearances.

Now, Joint will have to face Serena again, but with Venus on the other side of the court. Chan and Joint enter the tournament as the No. 14 seeds, giving the Williams sisters a difficult opening test as they attempt to extend their latest run together.

The matchup also offers Serena an opportunity to put the Wimbledon disappointment behind her. She will now have Venus alongside her rather than having to carry the comeback alone, with the sisters hoping to reproduce some of the doubles success that made them one of the most successful partnerships in tennis history.

Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova headline the women’s doubles field, with the experienced pairing among the leading contenders for the title.

The draw also features several players more commonly associated with singles. Sofia Kenin and Anastasia Potapova have joined forces, while Camila Osorio will partner Barbora Bartunkova.
