Elena Rybakina is a grand slam champion who recently missed out on number two and she'll play qualifiers at the weekend for the Qatar Open in Doha.
The event has one of the best lineups seen outside of the grand slams in recent years with only a handful of seeds missing. Due to the entry lists working in somewhat peculiar ways and not using current rankings, Rybakina is among those players that will need to play the qualifiers to enter the event.
To get into the main draw Rybakina would need four players to give up which seems unlikely only days before the event. She had a talk with journalist Reem Abulleil confirming to hear that it's her intention to play the qualifiers and she doesn't mind doing that. It would be interesting to check when did a reigning Wimbledon champion have to play qualifiers for anything and if this is actually the first time.
