Maria Sakkari suffered yet another mental meltdown as this time around she crashed out in Miami against Haddad Mai 6-4 1-6 2-6.
The Greek tennis player arrived in Miami after a very good fortnight in Indian Wells but that week finished with another disappointing result for her. It's been the story of her life as Sakkari often times manages to play very well at events but then falters towards the end of the event, usually in the final. This time around it happened much earlier but the methodology was the same.
She took the opening set with 6-4 and it seemed like she was cruising to another victory. However, things changed in the next two sets, and quite drastically so. The 2nd set was an utter collapse by Sakkari who completely lost the compass. Her opponent got more comfortable on the court and hit the ball extremely well.
One break gave her confidence and another gave her even more as she raced to a 6-1 2nd set finish. A very similar thing happened in the final set as Sakkari won her first service game in the set but quickly lost the compass once more. The Brazilian kept playing her game not being fazed by the result at all. She broke Sakkari once and then once more to take a 5-1 lead.
That lead turned into a 6-2 2nd set finish for the major upset at the event. The event claims yet another seed.
