The final Quarter-Final is set at the
Canadian Open Montreal (Omnium Banque Nationale) with
Liudmila Samsonova set to face
Belinda Bencic later this evening for a spot in the semi-finals.
Samsonova dumped out second seed, Aryna Sabalenka in a three set marathon in Montreal. It was a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win for the Russian who sealed it in nearly three hours. It is a double whammy for Sabalenka who lost her chance to become World No.1 last night and now won't win Montreal.
The first two sets saw a lot of long rallies between the pair and despite Sabalenka's pressure, she managed to get through her service games successfully. Sabalenka failed to produce in any of her four break point opportunities. It went to a tie-break and after a slow start, Samsonova sealed it 7-2.
There was a quick response from Sabalenka at the start of the second set, with the Belarusian finally breaking as the double fault count piled up. Sabalenka fended off break points herself but it held off.
Samsonova though edged ahead in the decider breaking Sabalenka for 3-1. But relinquished the lead at 4-3. However this was only momentary as Samsonova regained control and went towards the finish with double faults handing it her on a plate which she sealed.
Next up is Belinda Bencic who saw off Petra Kvitova in a match in which the Swiss ace looked spent at the end as she got over the line finally at 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 and will now have a second match of the night.
