Belinda Bencic failed to win the bett1 Open trophy after getting upset by Liudmilla Samsonova in the final.
The Swiss player appeared to be in control of the match but the Russian was able to come back in stellar fashion to win 1-6 6-1 6-3. Bencic played great tennis all week long but completely fell off a cliff in the final. Samsonova showed some early nerves losing the opening set 1-6. The Russian was playing aggressively but overshot the court many times.
She was able to finally get the balls in the court which resulted in a thrashing of Bencic 6-1. The Swiss player simply did not have an answer and her returning has not been on point all day long. The Russian was able to break Bencic early after the momentum-shifting 2nd set and she never looked back.
Bencic occasionally played some good rallies and even forced break points later in the set but Samsonova hit several aces which preserved her lead. Discouraged by another failed attempt Bencic gave up and lost her serve once to end the match.
A great win for Samsonova who outplayed her opponent for the majority of the match. Her biggest asset was her serve which worked to perfection today and Bencic had no answer for it and lost a match she should have won easily.
