Serena Williams one again came up short at a Grand Slam in her pursuit to win another one and tie the all-time record of 24.
Ever since Serena Williams won the 2015
Australian Open it became clear to everyone that she would most likely break the record of Margaret Court for the most Grand Slams in history. Now 5 years later she still finds herself at 23 having come up short at 10 Grand Slams after that. Following another disappointing loss she spoke to the media where she said that too many mistakes cost her in the match:
“I wouldn't say I was nervous, no. The difference today was errors. I made so many errors today. Honestly, it was opportunities where I could have won. I could have been up 5-love. I just made so many errors."
Speaking on her game overall at this event she said:
“I felt like I was hitting well. I was hitting well this whole tournament. Even the first couple of games I played well. Even then I had so many opportunities.”
When Serena was leaving the court she paused for a moment, put her hand on her heart and waved to the crowd. Many wondered whether it was a final goodbye to Melbourne Park but Serena commented on that move by saying:
“I don't know. The Aussie crowd is so amazing, so it was nice to see."
It remains to be seen where we will see Serena Williams again as she said that for now, she plans on playing only Grand Slams. If that is true we will not get to see Serena for a while.
