With
Roland Garros less than a week away, there is talk of whether defending champion
Iga Swiatek could defend her title or if a legend like
Serena Williams has what it takes to make one final run and finally claim her 24th Grand Slam title.
However, there are several other WTA stars who have surprisingly great records on clay, with many having career winning percentages of over 65% on the red dirt.
Atop the list is of course Serena Williams, who has won three
French Open titles in her illustrious career. Furthermore, she has won 13 WTA titles on clay, leaving her with an impressive 82.5%, the highest percentage among active players.
After taking the WTA circuit by storm in 2020, Iga Swiatek sits at second place among active players with a 81.5 winning percentage on clay. The Polish star shocked the world when she won her maiden Grand Slam at last year's Roland Garros without dropping a set, and has been a force on the tour ever since. Extremely proficient on clay, the 19-year old won her third career WTA title this year in Rome, defeating former World No.1
Karolina Pliskova 6-0 6-0 in the final.
Coming in at third place is
Kim Clijsters, who has retired twice but still has the itch to play. The Belgian has a stellar record of winning 74.4% of her matches on clay, and could be a threat at this year's French Open.
Simona Halep, Colombian Maria Osorio Serrano and American teenager
Coco Gauff are tied at 73.7%, with Spaniard
Carla Suarez Navarro holding 15th place with an impressive 66.3 winning percentage on clay.
