"Serena Williams was victim of double standards in 2018 US Open final" says Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams played in a very dramatic 2018 US Open where Osaka dominated but was overshadowed by the clash of Williams and umpire Carlos Ramos.

Most tennis fans know what happened in the 2018 US Open final when Serena Williams took exception to the way Carlos Ramos was officiating the match. Williams received several code violations resulting in a loss of points and later game with Williams completely losing her cool and calling the supervisor. The ruling of Ramos was upheld and Williams went on to lose the match.

The whole thing became a huge deal in the tennis world as Osaka was practically booed during the trophy ceremony resulting in her crying. Three years later, Osaka has spoken out about the whole experience noting that Williams was a victim of double standards in tennis. She said:

"Definitely if a male player did that, it wouldn't have been so broadcasted. There's actually been male players that have done far worse, like literally last year and this year, and they don't get news reports at all."

Osaka believes the only reason the whole thing became a polarizing topic in the sports world is that it was a woman involved, especially one as iconic as Serena Williams.

She further said:

"But I do know that people are very interested in Serena and whatever she does is going to get news attention. And it was just unfortunate that it had to be that moment that caught a lot of people's interest."
