Caroline
Wozniacki revealed that she spoke with Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters before
deciding to make her comeback to the WTA tour.
The
Canadian Open features Danish former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki as one of
its attractions, who announced a few months ago her desire to return to
professional competition.
In a press
conference at the National Bank Open Montreal, the former Australian Open
champion mentioned that before her comeback, she had conversations with Serena
Williams and Kim Clijsters.
“I talked
to Kim and Serena. Serena’s just on a different level, tennis-wise. When she
played her best it was basically impossible to beat her. So she probably had a
different perspective coming back than me," Wozniacki said.
Wozniacki
hasn't played on the WTA tour since the 2020 Australian Open, where she reached
the third round but was defeated by Tunisia's Ons Jabeur. After her retirement,
the Danish player became a mother and has now decided to make a return to the
tour, feeling that she has nothing to lose.
"At
this point in my career and a lot of the players' careers that have been on
tour for a long time, you know how to play your game.
You know
what you need to improve on or what you're doing great. But at the end of the
day, a lot of it is mental and in important moments you need to be able to step
up and play your best and not fear failure. You've got to want to take your
opportunity to take your chances."
“I'm here.
I've got nothing to lose. I have already done so much in my career and
basically ticked off most of the goals that I had set. But I'm here because I
love to compete. I love the sport, and I feel like I still have a lot to give
to the sport. And doing it with the family just makes it so much more
enjoyable," she claimed.
In the
first round of Montreal, Wozniacki was drawn to debut against Australian player
Kimberly Birrell, a 25-year-old tennis player who advanced through the
qualifying rounds.
