Tennis fans have reacted to
Aryna Sabalenka's shock defeat at the hands of
Liudmila Samsonova at the National Bank
Canadian Open (Omnium Banque Nationale) in Montreal.
World No. 2 Sabalenka went out of the WTA 1000 event after losing in three sets to fifteenth seed Samsonova, who emerged victorious over the Belarusian player 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-3, after nearly three hours of play.
This served as a further disappointment for Sabalenka after her chances of overtaking world No. 1
Iga Swiatek were dashed when the Polish player defeated Karolina Muchova to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament. The 22-year-old went on to win against Danielle Collins, and will now face fourth seed Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals.
Fans have mixed reaction to Sabalenka's defeat
Since Sabalenka's defeat, tennis fans have taken to social media to voice their opinions. Some expressed their disappointment for the player:
"Daniil [Medvedev] and Aryna both lost, with their beloved double faults. My day is ruined before it even starts," wrote one Twitter user.
"Carlito [Carlos Alcaraz], Daniil, Aryna all out in one day. .. Only player I care about now is elena otherwise done with this tournament," commented another.
Pressure to be No. 1 affecting Sabalenka
Meanwhile, others suggested that the pressure of reaching world No. 1 could be affecting the 25-year-old's game:
"Not only is Sabalenka chasing #Swiatek, but she‘s also feeling the pressure of other players, like Rybakina and others chasing her. She’s clearly feeling the pressure," commented one.
"I think keeping the thought of world no 1 might be hampering ur game. Would u plz try some process to control ur emotions under pressure. Always loves ur joyful act outside the court. Wish u all the best," wrote another.
