After deciding to leave her native Australia for six months without return due to pandemic restrictions, Ashleigh Barty deserves an extended rest, according to her coach, Craig Tyzzer.
The World No.1 has played nine tournaments and won four of them since leaving home in March, with her triumph at Wimbledon being her biggest title on the road. However, Tyzzer revealed that Barty required some rest, and was beginning to feel homesick.
"She needs to get home, she’s a super homebody,” Tyzzer told the Australian Associated Press. “Indian Wells is still on the radar but she just needs a rest. She was physically and mentally exhausted. So I told her to just get away and have a holiday and just refresh everything. We’ll probably make a decision at the end of the week about what she’s going to do depending on where she’s at.”
Barty is currently on vacation in the UK, and will likely compete at Indian Wells in October. However, her participation at the season-ending WTA Finals in Guadalajara is in doubt, as the 25-year old would prefer to return home and prepare for next year's Australian Open.
“It certainly isn’t easy for us to get there and to play that event in Mexico and then to come back and have to do two more weeks in quarantine and then your summer is sort of ruined as well,” added Tyzzer. “It’s a decision we’ll have to sit and mull over quite a bit.”
