Simona Halep was cruising in her Rome Masters match against Kerber before she was forced to retire.
Simona Halep won the first set with 6-1 against Angelique Kerber was up 2-0 40-15 went things went sideways. It's not clear when she suffered the injury but her play started deteriorating with Kerber pulling it back to 3-3. Simona called for an MTO and after a brief consultation decided to retire from the match.
The injury seemed like a lower leg injury and it looked pretty bad. After the match Simona gave an update on social media describing the injury as a calf tear:
"Unfortunately an ultrasound has revealed that I have a tear in my left calf. I will get an MRI tomorrow to understand the injury in more detail, but at the moment we are unsure of recovery time. I’m so disappointed to end my tournament in Rome like this. But I will do everything I can to take care of the injury and be back as soon as possible. Thanks so much for your support and I’ll keep you posted on my progress ."
The injury comes at a very tricky time with the Roland Garros not far away. Calf tears can be tricky and depending on the extent of the injury it might put her French Open campaign in danger. For now, everyone hopes she will make a quick recovery and be ready in time for the Roland Garros.
