20-year-old Ukrainian Daria Snigur made headlines today in New York by beating Simona Halep at the US Open 6-2 0-6 6-4.
It was quite the scoreline between Halep and Snigur and quite the match between two players who were exchanging blows. Sniguer plays very aggresively with a distinct technique that gives her flat groundstrokes some amazing angles. Almost immediatelly Halep found out that it would be very tricky to handle.
The Romanian found herself going from one side of the court to the other instead of being the attacking player. She tries to overcompensate but sprayed 11 errors in the 2-6 losing effort. She bounced back in superb fashion as Snigur missed every ball she attempted to hit in the 2nd set.
Serving poorly did not aid the Ukrainian as she got a bagel in the 2nd set. The final set was one where fans expected Halep to continue dominating but she didn't. Reverting back to her error-ridden ways, Halep found herself helpless against the 20-year-old.
Snigur did not look nervous at all in this match and continued playing strong tennis and hitting the ball really hard. Standing behind the line allowed her to hunt for her angles and she did it 6-3. Halep greatly helped with a multitude of errors. It took Snigur 3 match points to do it but Halep sealed it with her 30th unforced error.
