World no. 2 and the two-time Major champion Simona Halep still remembers how she met Roger Federer and asked him for an autograph while still a junior.
Simona remembers that Roger made a friendly approach and said a few encouraging words, which meant a lot to Simona at that moment. The Romanian understands that Roger has to retire at some point, calling it a tragedy for the entire sport, as Roger inspired the whole generation of players who came after him. Federer is currently in Dubai, working on a comeback after skipping almost the entire 2020 season.
Roger competed at the Australian Open and underwent two knee surgeries in February and May, deciding to skip the rest of the season and make a fresh start in 2021. Both Halep and Federer should play at the Australian Open from February 8.
"I didn't know how to react, I timidly handed him my badge, and I asked him if he could give me an autograph. He was very kind and gave me a few encouraging words, even though he was already at the top. When Roger retires, it will be a tragedy for all of us. What he accomplished is enormous, and he will remain the entire generation's idol. Still, we will have to respect his decision," Simona Halep said.
