Former US Open champion,
Sloane Stephens appeared to share her heartbreak as
Aryna Sabalenka's boyfriend Konstantin Koltsov passed away at the age of 42 due to a detached blood clot while with the Australian Open champion at the
Miami Open.
The news broke at the end of Monday night, but Stephens was one of the first to seemingly comment on it albeit it lead to a lot of questioning as to whether the reports were true. At the time, it was only Belarusian media and also unconfirmed reports that were saying he passed away with Sabalenka's social media stories erased and no comment coming from any media outlets in Miami to confirm it.
But Koltsov's team back home in Belarus confirmed the news and this was soon confirmed also by other outlets including Reuters. As of right now, Sabalenka is yet to pass comment or withdraw from the Miami Open, but it is likely a matter of time. She previously lost her father five years ago in 2019 at the age of just 43, only a year older than Koltsov was when he unfortunately passed as the tennis community including seemingly Stephens rallies around the Belarusian amid her sudden news.
“That moment when you can actually feel the pain in your chest from hearing something or seeing something that breaks your heart," said Stephens on X.
