The first day of action at the Brisbane International did not disappoint with lots of big names crashing out in the opening stanza.

Among them was Angelique Kerber who was stunned by Sam Stosur in a battle of former Grand Slam Champions.
Stosur is just outside of the top 100 now but always proves herself on occasions and this continued today as she saw off the World No.18 in a 7-6, 7-6 victory which was close throughout.
In another surprising defeat, Elina Svitolina was dumped out by Danielle Collins losing 6-1, 6-1 in just 56 minutes who was number four seed and a former winner in the tournament in 2018.
It isn't the best start to the year for the Ukrainian who has a new coach in Marcos Baghdatis in tow and belief after claiming double semi-finals in two Grand Slams, there is a lot to think about for Svitolina as a result.
There was victories though for the likes of Sofia Kenin and Alison Riske. Kenin beat Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova 7-6, 6-4; while Riske defeated Karolina Muchova 6-4, 6-2.
There was another upset though as Johanna Konta headed out of proceedings losing to Barbora Strycova in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
