Svitolina barring some exhibition tournaments in Germany hasn't been in action since the restart; and she was embroiled into a real battle by Pavyluchenkova in the second set; with a back and forth end to the tie.
Despite missing multiple match points, the number four seed is through to face either Anett Kontaveit or Svetlana Kuznetsova in Round Three.
She came out of the blocks well in the first set with a pivotal break coming at 4-2 up; which saw her en route to winning the set and claiming a good start to proceedings.
The second set was anything but pedestrian and saw Pavyluchenkova go 4-2 up herself; with a double break of serve but Svitolina came back to level it up and then broke herself to take the lead 5-4 and it looked like the World No.6 was going to head towards the finishing line.
She was frustrated though when serving for the match missing two match points including a double fault on the second match point. From there, she went back and forth; with the Russian and a break was concluded by Pavyluchenkova. She took the next game 40-0 to head towards a potential set back.
She read the play well to go 30-0 up on Svitolina's serve; but it was soon turned round as she went 40-30 up and on the verge of a tiebreak.
Pavlyuchenkova careered the ball into the net to give Svitolina advantage but a thundering shot sent it back to deuce. Despite that, she claimed it to send it all the way. Deciding set or victory for Svitolina.
A 2-1 lead began the tiebreak for Pavlyuchenkova; but it was soon 3-2 to Svitolina who managed to turn it round. A classy backhand lob saw her go 4-3 up; and she soon ended up on match point number three which she sealed with a great dropshot.
