A couple of seeds is through to the next round of the
Indian Wells Masters with
Elina Svitolina besting Martincova while Swiatek took down Martic.
Elina Svitolina was the first major seed to advance on day 3 of the Indian Wells Masters with the Ukrainian battling past a very solid Tereza Martincova. The Czech player is a tricky player to beat as she covers the court well but Svitolina had no issues for the most part. The first set was a great one by Elina who played smashing tennis on both sides of the court.
On serve, she was firm winning 12 of 13 1st service points she had. On return, she waited for a chance on Martincova's 2nd serve and when presented with one she was clinical. Using both break points she faced she clinched the first one with 6-2. The 2nd set was a topsy-turvy affair where Svitolina was up twice each time losing the advantage. In the end, she broke down Martincova late in the set for a 6-2 7-5 victory in 69 minutes.
Joining her in the next round will be
Iga Swiatek who had a very good practice session against Petra Martic especially early in the match. Swiatek came out blazing early hitting winners left and right. Martic played right into her hand with an abysmal 47 % 1st serve hit percentage giving her plenty of chances to smash the ball from the baseline. As you can imagine Swiatek was clinical winning the first with 6-1.
The 2nd set was not much different stylistically with all the things that happened in the first repeating in the 2nd. Martic served even worse (45%) but this time around Swiatek was more hit and miss. She also dropped her level on her own serve giving Martic some chances to be aggressive which she did. Swiatek lost her serve twice in the set but she also broke Martic four times to win it 6-3 and move on.
