Quick hands, quick feet: @iga_swiatek warms up before her Madrid QF win on Wednesday evening.
Iga Swiatek advanced to the semifinals of the Madrid Open with a comfortable victory over Petra Martic, winning 6-0, 6-3.
Swiatek began her participation in Madrid with easy wins over Julia Grabher and Bernarda Pera. In the round of 16, she survived against a tough Ekaterina Alexandrova who took her to the third set, but it wasn't enough against the world No. 1.
Petra Martic started the tournament as the 27th seed in the second round and defeated Laura Siegemund and Anna Kalinskaya before causing an upset in the round of 16 by defeating former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova.
In the quarterfinal match, the Polish player had no problems ending the hopes of world No. 33 Martic. In just 27 minutes, Iga Swiatek won the first set with three consecutive breaks and only eight points against, taking a commanding 6-0 lead in the score.
In the second set, the Croatian showed some resistance to Swiatek's relentless defense, but the 3-time Grand Slam champion took advantage of the only break point she had in her favor to gain an advantage and maintain her strong service games. That was enough to close out the second set 6-3 and advance to the semifinals of the Madrid Open.
For a spot in the final, Swiatek will face Veronika Kudermetova, who eliminated world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in three sets.
