World number one
Iga Swiatek has achieved yet another milestone
as she became the 10th player with the highest winning percentage in
Grand Slam events in the Open Era.
The 22-year-old has been in sublime form in the recent past
as she has won four major titles in women’s singles since 2020.
It is because of this reason the Polish tennis star is now
10th in the list of women’s singles players, along with former world
number one Australia’s Evonne Goolagong Cawley, with the highest win percentage
in Grand Slam events in the Open Era of 83.1 percent.
Swiatek’s three major titles win came in French Open whereas
one came in the US Open last year. Her most recent triumph was at Roland Garros
earlier this year where she defeated Czech Republic’s Karolína Muchova in the final
with a score of 6–2, 5–7, 6–4.
Despite her achievements while playing at Grand Slams, the
record of the Warsaw-born at
Wimbledon remains pretty average as this remains
the only major tournament where she is yet to play beyond the fourth round.
She has now equalled her best-ever outing while playing in
London as she qualified for the round of 16 of the competition after beating Croatia’s
Petra Martic on Thursday.
The last time when Swiatek played at this stage in Wimbledon,
she ended up losing to the 2022 finalist Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur with a score of
5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
Therefore, the
reigning French Open champion will be hoping to put a much better show and
finally cement her place in the last-eight when she will face Switzerland’s Belinda
Bencic round of 16 clash on Saturday.
