World number one
Iga Swiatek was penalised by the chair umpire
for not being ready to return the serve during the Cincinnati Open (Western
& Southern Open) clash.
The 22-year-old defeated Wimbledon 2023 champion Czech
Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova in the quarterfinal of the competition with a
score of 7-6, 6-1 on Friday.
During the match, the chair umpire penalised the Polish
tennis player for taking too long to get ready to return the serve.
“It is not your time,” said Cicak. “You were stood there for
another 5-7 to seven seconds for no reason and you can at least turn around.”
On the other hand, the Warsaw-born was of the opinion that her
opponent is trying to rush things and that she was well within her rights to
take that amount of time.
After the match, Swiatek stated her point of view regarding the
development by stating: “I’m really happy with my performance. It wasn’t easy
to adjust to her spin because she is a leftie, but I really wanted to fight for
every ball and in the end, this has worked. I was much more focused after the
first set and in the second set, I knew exactly what to do.”
Swiatek will now face America’s Coco Gauff in the semifinal
of the competition on Saturday.
