World number one
Iga Swiatek became the youngest player
since Russia’s
Maria Sharapova to win 20 6-0 sets in Grand Slam events.
The 22-year-old, who is the top-seeded player in the women’s
singles at
Wimbledon 2023, secured a thumping second-round win against
Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo.
In a match that lasted just one hour and 10 minutes, the
Polish tennis star lost just two games as the final score was 6-2, 6-0.
The second set’s perfect display helped Swiatek achieve another
milestone as it was her 20th 6-0 set triumph at Grand Slams.
While doing so, she became the youngest after Sharapova to achieve
that feat. The former world number one achieved the feat in 2008.
The result on Wednesday will be a big boost for Swiatek who
does not have a great record while playing at Wimbledon.
It remains the only Grand Slam out of the four where she has
never played in the quarterfinals or beyond.
Her best performance came in the 2021
edition where she was knocked out from the fourth round after suffering a defeat
to last year’s finalist Ons Jabeur with a score of 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
Swiatek will now face the winner of the match between Petra
Martic and Diane Parry in the third round of the competition on Friday.
