Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek believes that she is now trying to lower down her expectations after losing in the US Open quarterfinal. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is moving towards conclusion and the final’s lineup has been completed in the both women’s and men’s categories.
In the women’s singles category, America’s Jessica Pegula produced an upset as she defeated world number one Swiatek in the quarterfinal in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4. Talking after the match, Swiatek explained in detail that she is feeling the burden of expectations. The Warsaw-born star explained that she is now looking to lower expectations and focus on playing well because she knows that she can’t win every competition.
“Well, I'm always trying to have lower expectations, because I know that, like, any of us can win this tournament, and it's not going to be easy, you know,” she said. “And also, I feel like when I have high expectations, I never perform well. So I try to lower them. It's not like it's just low and that's it, you know, because it's hard to have low expectations when everybody is expecting something from you, and you kind of know that you might have a game to play well. I'm more just focusing on the work. When I talk to you guys [media], everybody is always, like, speaking about results straightaway when you go to a tournament, they want to know what my goal is, I don't know, winning the final, the semifinal, and it's just not it, you know. These are not my goals when I go in a tournament.”
With that result, Swiatek finished the Grand Slam season with just one title. Her only major title triumph this year was the French Open, where she lifted the title after beating Jasmine Paolini in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
